I dont know if I would say that after this show he was sitting in a gutter, Yes he did have a bad drug habit, but he continued to perform and make records. I saw him at many shows and his band was tight, very talented back in the late 70s and early 80s. He had a tumultuous relationship with Toots to say the least, etc. But I would rather remember him for his talent and how he managed to keep at it all of those years. RIP Willy

That is the year I’ve heard Willy with his Mink DeVille band for the first time. Ever since then I’m in love with his music. He was such a remarkable person, truly unique. God bless him! R.I.P.

If not for these photos, my own recall of that night would surely have faded to a blur by now. It’s terrific to hear from another fan who witnessed that amazing performance!
Glad you enjoyed my tribute, and thanks for your comments!

At this point, he still didn’t want to perform. Now the club’s manager, Jack R I think, joined me in my battle to get a very pissed off Willie onto the stage. For those who were there that night: You saw the man at his finest. He was a truly gifted artist. The next time I saw Willie, he was literally sitting in the gutter, unsigned, out of work and totally lost in his own purple haze. I’m glad to learn that he came back. He was special. He was one of a kind. RIP Willie.

While I begged, cajoled, scolded and pleaded with Willie to do the gig, his son continued to harass me with language that I, then 27, had never heard. Throughout the two hours I spent in their room, Toots continued to press Willie’s pants, intensely focused on her task. Finally, at the moment he’d been scheduled to hit the stage, I got him to come with me. We sped down Comm Ave. where we parked backstage .

Hey Becauseno, thanks for posting 7/20/78. Back then I was a Capitol Records promo guy and Willie was one of my artists. I was just doing a little reminiscing after hearing of Willie’s passing when I came upon your piece. What you don’t know about that very cool night was that it almost didn’t happen. Two hours before show time, I stopped by his hotel room only to hear that he didn’t want to play.

    Well said…
No amount of pyrotechnics and acrobatics can cover for a weak song… it’s just a distraction.
If the music reaches you… and if the singer can make you feel the magic of a great song, nothing more is needed…

I don’t understand why people are taken in by fireworks and people jumping around like fools as a “great show” when there are songs and performances like this out there. It’s all about the Music and this is music.

It’s kind of a step back to a simpler kind of music.. just pure fine music, performed by a great band.
That voice… those words … that music …
    Simply beautiful.
