I would have been six years old, living in Dayton, Ohio. My Kentuckian grandparents lived in Cincinnati, and we often visited them. I had no idea revolutionary things like this were happening so near to the location of my dull, provincial, suburban childhood! The announcer/host is surprisingly tolerant and seems genuinely interested in the act. And people thought KISS (what a pack of clowns) were sooooooo scary when they came on the radar several years later.

Was that started by the same people who said you could get high by smoking banana peels?

I don’t think the word ‘fault’ describes the attitude adequately , but it was the status quo’s “impression” of Iggy and all the rock&rollers that polarized society then. I saw Iggy & the Stooges play in NYC two or three years ago.

So it was Iggy’s fault the National Guard shot anti-war protesters in cold blood? I always thought it was Nixon’s fault.

Thanks for posting this. I remember watching this on TV as a kid growing up near Dayton. You can’t imagine how shocking this was. The reason for the peanut butter is that there were hysterical stories at time about kids mainlining peanut butter to get high. And here’s Iggy tossing PB into the crowd. The day the 60’s died ….

Very witty! This concert footage is briliant, encapslating Iggy at his most out of control (yet amazingly disciplined). It’s great that the older generation host was very appreciative of the “New Music”. A great related video would be Bill Grundy’s Sex Pistols interview. And Hendrix. And Who with Keith Moon’s exploding drum kit. Actually it’s amazing how many good positive moments rock has brought us.

I’d rate this the greatest event in human history. The Resurrection, in comparison, was trite and boring.

iggy gave enough reason for the status quo to hate youth in Ohio, thus the Kent State incident.

the scene with the peanut butter. that was punk rock in a flash. i guess it’s called a seminal moment. it’s not punk per se, but he send out the pulse wave that sparked the punk movement…perhaps this is a overstatement but it definitely is an image that will live on.
